Shirley Poynter
Shirley was the eldest of five children. Her father died when she was 14 years old. She has lived in Hull all her life. Shirley recalls her childhood, growing up near Walton Street. She attended Paisley Street School. Shirley remembers being evacuated during the Second World War when she was 7 years old. She was treated well and enjoyed the experience. Shirley left school at 15 and worked at Ombler’s in the warehouse. She then went on to work at Smith & Nephew on the production lines. Shirley recalls buying her first house for £500 before getting a council house on Orchard Park Estate.
